Handmade Home: Book Review

When The Creative Family: How to Encourage Imagination and Nurture Family Connections
came out in 2008, I was intrigued. I loved the photos. I loved the concept. But, it’s just Jason and I here in our home. So I took a pass. I was so happy when Amanda Blake Soule put her creative talents to work again and wrote Handmade Home: Simple Ways to Repurpose Old Materials into New Family Treasures.
This book is about one my passions: resourceful living. It’s all about living your life creatively and infusing your home with that wonderful, handmade touch.

Look at these beautiful, little pot holders. Perfect for your leftover bits of fabric I must point out. :)

(I just love this paper mache bowl.) In fact, that’s the theme of this book: using what’s on hand, making things from scratch, employing earth friendly methods. It even includes a pattern for making your own menstrual cycle panty liners.

Check out that cute little pin cushion. This is a good place to mention that the photographs are absolutely stunning.

This beautiful bath mat is made out of an old towel and some jazzy floral pattern.

I’ve always wanted to make a braided rag rug. There is a wonderful how-to in the book. All the tutorials are absolutely wonderful. The author is a delight to read in general. I really enjoyed straight up reading this book cover to cover.

Have you read this book? What’s your favorite project? What do you like the most about it?

  1. Blast, I want to make a braided rug now and the rest of those projects too.

    Thanks for the review.

  2. [Looong Comment Part One :]
    OK, This is ridiculous… I am assembling tutorials from the net for the passed few weeks, working rigorously and thoroughly. I think that I covered all the old tuts and I am subscribed to about a bazillion blogs to get all the new ones that come out…

    And what is my point, you’d ask?

  3. [Looong Comment Part Two :]
    That other than the braided rug (that I took care to actually buy a specific book to study how to do those) and the pincushion (that I had already made) all the projects that you pointed to? are on my immediate to-do list!

    I am so talented. UGH.

  4. That was the longest possible way of saying that I love all the projects!!!
    And, Umm.. Hi, I’m Nitsan {wave}
