A new grocery store was just built in our area and they are pretty good, more my style than dekalb style. I’m really not sure how long they are going to last really, or at least, I’m not sure how long they will be stocking what the kinds of neat-o stuff that they are currently stocking. The first time I went there I picked up some reusable grocery bags for $1 each. They are okay…. but they are, i think, still plastic. Or at least some, non-natural fabric substance. They also seem like they would rip after maybe a few weeks of grocery getting. I really like the idea of having cloth grocery bags though, so I searched around for tutorial and Instructibles had a few good ones. I really like the pillow case one and is the closest to what I did.
Here are some tutorials:
Tote-ally easy way to help the earth – how I made mine, but with just fabric, not pillow cases (I didn’t have any to spare)
Reusable Grocery Bag
Remake Your $1 reusable grocery bag – they aren’t always quite the right size
Reuse Me Produce Bags – great little bags for your produce
And then if you are interested in going to a farmers market, I ran across this instructible on how to shop at a farmers market
I also found a little blurb on the question of paper or plastic on Ideal Bite and their answer was nice: neither, make and bring your own cloth bag.
Here are my favorite grocery bags on Etsy:
Melissa Vest – Grocery Getter Bags – I really like these bags, there are a bunch of different graphics, but I like the bike.
Chings Totes – Canvas Bags
Margotbianca – batiked tote bags
Loyalty and Blood – Lettered Tote – K for Kristin, I like that it’s a tree too!
Amanda Made – Large Sturdy Tote
Blue Tulip – Shopping Tote – This is just so pretty, she has so many cute bags
Katina Create – Produce Bags
Kim Quilts – Grocery B.O.B.
Made by Molly – Fold Down Grocery Bags
The other great thing about these cloth bags is that they make great Christmas gifts for anyone who is leaning green and you want to give them a nice little shove in the right direction. My sister is already pretty eco conscious, but doesn’t have cloth bags yet, so for her, it will be just perfect. Also, with less than one week to Christmas and at about 2 hours per bag, a do-able project for Christmas gifting!
Okay, that’s it for today. I will see you all the Saturday after next! Have a very Merry Christmas!
Oh and don’t forget to pick up the January Subscription of Clm!
Ooh, the bag looks neat!
Just wanted to say thanks for mentioning us in your blog, and for the great leads on bags. We are currently looking for reusable bags that are made in the USA and your blog gave us some great leads.
Ideally your,
Hannah and the Ideal Bite staff
Just wanted to say thanks for blogging about and thanks on the leads for reusable bags. We are looking for replacements and your blog helped!
I just saw this idea for making a tshirt into a grocery bag in the January Martha Stewart Living Magazine. You only have to sew one seam! So cool, I plan to do this with tshirts that don’t fit or have a small stain on them, but I can’t bear to throw away. Go to http://www.marthastewart.com and search “t-shirt bag”
