Quick Treat: Chocolate Strawberry Yogurt

Strawberries are just starting to come into season around Iowa. You can get a huge gallon container for just $4. Usually that’s the cost of a pint. Unfortunately, a gallon is way too much for Jason and I to eat. I’ve been trying to come up with enough ideas to use them up before they go bad, things that can freeze and are healthy. Sure I could whip them all into strawberry tarts, but how many of those should I be eating?

Why are strawberries so great?

According to NutritionFacts.com,

“Strawberries are very low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. They are also a good source of folate and potassium, and a very good source of dietary fiber, vitamin C and manganese.”

They also have 3 grams of fiber/1 cup which is about the same as some “whole grain” cereals.

Granted, like any fruit, Nutrition Facts cautions “The bad: A large portion of the calories in this food come from sugars.” Yep. They sure do. So while they are a tasty treat, don’t eat them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

That said, here is the first thing I made when I got home from the store last night:

Chocolate Strawberry Yogurt

Ingredients
:: 1/3 cup plain or vanilla yogurt
:: 3 large strawberries (about 1/3 cup chopped)
:: 1 Tablespoon mini chocolate chips (mix in some walnuts too if y
:: Tea cup or small bowl

Directions
Mix it all into the tea cup and enjoy!

And that’s why it’s a quick treat!

During strawberry season, I’m going to be playing around with treats to satisfy my sweet tooth for anything strawberry related. Anyone know a good recipe for a healthy shortcake or homemade frozen yogurt?
