A pile of fabric = a pile of fabric

I always see pictures of people’s studios and everything looks so pristine. Their cuts of fabric in particular are in tidy mode. It makes me jealous. And drives me a little batty. No matter how hard I try, my fabric always looks like a very unsexy pile of fabric on the day to day level. Believe it or not, I actually went through and ironed and nicely stacked every single piece of fabric in my unsexy fabric pile. The tidy mode lasted for all of 10 minutes, at which point I was compelled to root through it and make I don’t even remember what.

Maybe it’s like the pristine shirt tables at old navy that we had to “recover” every time a customer touched them. Is it hopeless to think that someday my fabric piles will look more glamorous than just piles of fabric? Maybe I should make the intern I’m getting in the spring to organize it every time I root through it 3 or 4 times a day. Now that would be crazy.

I know it sounds like I have a love hate relationship with my fabric, but it’s a lot more love than hate. I think the best solution would be to get or make some nice baskets and put it in those. Then the shelf would look tidy, even if there was an explosion of fabric residing inside each basket. And granted I took particularly unflattering pictures of my fabric, when I get back from my folks I’ll take some sexy pictures of it. I do love it. Do you see those cute little airplanes? Or that fun crazy bright yellow vintage piece? Love it!

How do you keep your fabric looking tidy and organized?

Happy Crafting!

  1. I’ve saw a tutorial somewhere where the person put all their fabrics into bolts, wrapped around a piece of cardboard. Sounds like a good intern project.
